Flash
Introduction

Flash was primarily geared for developing animation and visual content with features supporting design-friendly production. In the beginning, the most exciting thing about using Adobe Flash Player (the runtime player for flash files) was the ability to display lightweight vector content on the web. As Flash Player capabilities continued to expand, the range of animation features in Flash Professional (the authoring tool) also grew to support a wider range of creative tasks. In the late nineties, "browsing the web" meant going online to read text and view static images. But that model was limiting. As the number of Internet-connected businesses and individuals increased, so did the demand for richer, more responsive user experiences.
In 2002, Macromedia coined the term rich Internet application (RIA). RIAs combine the flexibility, responsiveness, and ease of use of desktop applications with the broad reach of the web. RIAs provide a dynamic web experience that is rich and engaging, as well as interactive.
Now many web designers and developers use Adobe Flash or Adobe Flex, which are part of the Adobe Flash Platform, to build RIAs. Flash is an authoring environment for creating rich, interactive content for the web. Flex is a cross-platform development framework for creating RIAs. Content created with Flash and Flex is deployed using Adobe Flash Player. RIAs created in Flex, Flash, and even Ajax can also be taken to the desktop using the Adobe AIR desktop runtime. More recent versions of Flash Professional have included some great feature updates for visual designers. Flash Professional CS4 (and Flash Player 10) introduced 3D rotation and animation tools, the Bone tool for creating animated armatures, and an advanced type of motion tweening based on an XML definition of the motion in an animation (which allows for reusing and repurposing visually generated animations across timelines and projects). Flash Professional CS5 continues to build the visual developer's toolbox by introducing improved text support using the Text Layout Framework and a new type of font embedding using the Compact Font Format (CFF). Flash Professional CS5 also introduces improved workflows and integration with the Flex SDK and Flash Builder as a code development environment.
